Our annual Fall Foray will be a bit different this year due to the pandemic. Each group is limited to five separate households and you must maintain physical distancing during the foray. Foray options are listed below. The specific foray location will be provided via email or arranged at the meeting place. From there we'll head up the mountain to search for mushrooms and talk about our finds. We will distribute Fall Foray packs (Includes two free t-shirts per household with additional available at cost, a copy of The Fungophile, and a Mushroom recipe book). Representative fungal specimens that are found during the individual forays will be brought to a central location, where they will be further examined and stored. On Saturday evening, August Aug. 29th, there will be a virtual foray via ZOOM to review and discuss the various finds and experiences from 7-9 PM.
You do need to be a member of the MSU to participate. Membership is per household (anyone living at your mailing address) and is $20 per calendar year. To become a member please click on the membership button.
Please bring hats, water-bottles, comfortable hiking shoes, a bag/basket for specimens, paper bags to keep your specimens separate, a small knife or gardening trowel, and a camera to document your finds. A snack can also be a great addition as they tend to last a few hours. Plan on hiking along and off of established trails with mild to moderate difficulty and be aware of your surroundings in case you get separated from the rest of the group.
Many mushroom species require rain to pop up which can make planning forays difficult. If certain areas are too dry than foray leaders will be in touch about moving locations or cancelling.
